Rudy’s Road to Kona Series: IN KONA!!!

This 4-month series is dedicated to following Rudy’s journey as she is physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually preparing for the monumental challenge of competing in the Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI.

A challenge of this magnitude requires great strength, commitment, sacrifice and smarts which tests the best of the best in the world of endurance sport.

Throughout this series we promise to bring you the real story, not just the fluffy “everything is great” part of her journey, but also the vulnerable, authentic and insightful aspects of her preparation, her race and her post-race experiences.

Rudy’s approach to training and racing combines a refreshing blend of – mindfulness, reflection, mental skills and true, hard-ass grit.

Rudy is IN KONA!!!

Aloha! Rudy conducts this interview from Kona, HI amidst the warm, humid tropical air, tweeting island birds and abundant sunshine. This dream she has been manifesting for years is in the here and now.

Rudy discusses how she is moving through race week with practice swims, bike sessions and “donkey crossings” on the Queen K Highway and runs the course next to age-groupers and pros alike.

How does Rudy keep her center and groundedness as the days tick by, getting closer and closer to race start? The questions that plague so many athletes in this phase of training also fill her human consciousness: “Did I train to the best of my ability?” “Will this training plan work?” “How do I compare with the other athletes?” and “What up with all these amazing bikes?”

She realizes in order to centered and grounded she needs to “stay within my box so I don’t get swept away with anxiety-provoking comparison.”

Rudy discusses how she experiences her mom’s presence throughout her ever-evolving journey and how her mom (who passed in 2015) is with her here on the island.

Rudy wants to thank all of you for your support and encouragement on her way to AND while in Kona. She feels honored and blessed to have you with her, getting her to the start line AND to the finish line.

Mahalo.
